The Immortals of England Cricket

Dear reader,

I am pleased to be able to report that my book, The Immortals of England Cricket, is finally out! You will recall that the book contains profiles of eleven England cricketers - a team - ranging in time from Wilfred Rhodes and S F Barnes, to James Anderson and Ben Stokes.

I set out the underlying principles in the introduction, and try to establish in the separate essays why each of these players is fit to rank as an “immortal”. There is a lovely cover quote from Vic Marks - “What an elegant way to start an argument”, and, of course, not everyone will agree with my selection.

I was interviewed on the BBC World Service cricket show, Stumped (link here, the interview is at 30:25) and there are a few differences of opinion.

The book is available on Amazon and other retail outlets. You can find links on the publishers website here.

A Tale of Three Tests

A Tale of Three Tests
Three Tests were played in the opening week of 2022, in Mount Maunganui, Sydney and Johannesburg. Each of them was truly memorable, demonstrating why Test cricket is incomparably the best of all formats and why it needs to be cherished by those who run the game. To deal with the Ashes game first, for part of the time it was …

Drama at the 'G: Boland’s Triumph Transcends England’s Pitiful Defeat

The Boxing Day Test saw Test cricket at its best. No, really. And I am not echoing Chris Silverwood’s inevitable call to take comfort from the positives England could draw from the game . Actually, for a while, on the second morning and part of the afternoon, while James Andersson and Mark Wood were bowling, England were at their best …
